The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is a major strategic project designed to divert part of the abundant water resources from the Yangtze River to North China and northwest China, thereby reversing the situation of flood in the south and severe water shortage in the north. It aims to promote the coordinated development of economy, society, population, resources and environment in the north and south of China.

With a total investment of 500 billion yuan, the project is bigger and more difficult than the Three Gorges Project. So far, the middle route of the south-to-North Water Diversion project and the first phase of the eastern route have been completed to transfer water to the north. The western route is still in the planning stage and no construction has begun.

By December 12, 2021, a total of 49.4 billion cubic meters of water had been transferred from the first and middle routes of the south-to-North Water Diversion Project, of which more than 44.1 billion cubic meters had been transferred from the first and 5.288 billion cubic meters from the first and eastern routes to Shandong. By tackling pollution with an iron fist and strengthening supervision and management, the water quality of the South-to-North Water Diversion project has reached the standard consistently and steadily for a long time.
